Multicure Hybrid Organo-Silsesquioxane Coatings for Preservation, Antifouling, and Strengthening Applications

This presentation focuses on tri-cure hybrid coatings that leverage UV-activated thiol-ene, amine-epoxy, and alkoxysilane sol-gel chemistries for rapid, robust surface treatments. The system rapidly bonds to glass, providing more than double the strength of uncoated glass and enabling anti-graffiti, hydrophobic, and removable coatings, which support the use of thinner, lighter, and more environmentally friendly glass products. Adapting the technology for stone and metal monuments provides durable, clear, hydrophobic, and acid-resistant protection, thereby maintaining the integrity of cultural heritage sites. Furthermore, these coatings prevent invasive mussel attachment to aquatic surfaces, such as boat hulls, thereby slowing their ecological spread and reducing the need for maintenance. These tri-cure coatings demonstrate broad applicability, rapid application, and robust, cost-effective protection for glass, monuments, and aquatic environments. Lastly, removable/recyclable and alternative coating systems will be briefly overviewed.

Joseph C. Furgal received his B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Detroit Mercy, while conducting undergraduate research with M. Mio and a Snyder summer research fellowship at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign under the direction of J. Moore. He earned his PhD. in Materials Chemistry under the direction of Professors R. M. Laine and T. Goodson III on silsesquioxane-based materials for energy/photonic applications at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He then went on to a postdoctoral research position in Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan under the direction of T. F. Scott, looking at sequence-defined peptoid oligomers and their self-assembly. Joseph is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry, Center for Photochemical Sciences, and Center for Great Lakes and Watershed Studies at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. He has recently won multiple research awards, including the University of Detroit Mercy All Star Alumni Award, BGSU Outstanding Early Career Researcher, Elliott Blinn Award for Research with Undergraduates, Olscamp Award for Excellence in Research, and the President’s Award for Collaborative Research. His current work focuses on using hybrid silsesquioxane and siloxane-based materials for the development and fundamental chemical understanding of photo-active architectures in the areas of performance coatings, environmental remediation, and controlled release systems for biomedical applications; as well as new methods to catalytically effect molecular transformation in silicon-based systems, including silicone and coating recycling methods. This research has been funded by the NSF, NSF I-Corps, National Park Service, NIH, NASA, USDA, Creare Inc., Johnson and Johnson Vision Care Inc., Angstrom Technologies, Bullen Ultrasonics, and the Ohio Department of Development/Northwest Ohio Innovation Consortium.

Enhancing Coating Performance with Silicone Technologies
Abstract: Silicones have emerged as a transformative class of materials in the coatings industry, offering unique properties that address both performance and sustainability demands. This presentation explores the commercial application of silicone-based additives, binders, and resins in architectural, industrial, and specialty coatings. Key benefits include enhanced weatherability, superior water repellency, improved substrate adhesion, and reduced surface tension for better flow and leveling.
We will highlight recent innovations in reactive silicones, hybrid systems, and low-VOC formulations that meet evolving regulatory standards while delivering high-performance results. Case studies will demonstrate how silicone technologies are being leveraged to extend coating lifespans, reduce maintenance cycles, and enable multifunctional surfaces—from anti-graffiti finishes to self-cleaning facades.
Attendees will gain insight into market trends, formulation strategies, and commercial opportunities for integrating silicones into next-generation coatings.

Dr. Daniel Calimente is Marketing Manager for coatings at Wacker Chemical Corporation, where he leads the efforts in implementing marketing strategies, support product innovation and launch for coatings. With over two decades of experience in the coatings industry, Dr. Calimente has built strong relationships with direct customers and distribution partners and helped commercialize advanced silicone technologies and delivered technical presentations and training courses across North America. He has been 14 years with WACKER also holding senior technical roles.
Prior to joining Wacker, Dr. Calimente held senior technical and leadership roles at PPG Industries and BASF Corporation, where he spearheaded new product development, supervised laboratory teams, and provided expert guidance on coatings technologies for both domestic and international markets.
Dr. Calimente holds a Ph.D. in Synthetic Organic Chemistry from South Dakota State University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Wayne State University on sugar chemistry. He is the author or co-inventor of numerous patents and publications in the field of silicone and polymer chemistry, and is a frequent presenter at leading industry conferences, including the Waterborne Symposium, American Coatings Show, and Western Coatings Symposium.
